Coco Gauff survived a scare in her opening match at the Canadian Open, as she scraped to a 7-5 4-6 7-6 (7-2) victory over Danielle Collins.

Gauff, a shock early exit at Wimbledon on the back of winning the French Open title in June, was just two points away from defeat in Montreal on Tuesday.

Yet the world number two fought back from the brink to prevail from a tense tussle that lasted just under three hours.

Gauff, the top seed in the absence of world number one Aryna Sabalenka, won nine of the last 11 points of the match to get the job done and set up a last-16 clash with Veronika Kudermetova.

"I was practicing well and I don't think I transferred it today, but hopefully I got my bad match of the tournament out of the way," Gauff said after a match in which she made 23 double faults and 74 unforced errors.

"Maybe if I cut that in half, it would be a quicker match for me. I thought that I was playing well, except for that part of my game."

Ninth seed Elena Rybakina also progressed to the last 16, as she fended off America's Hailey Baptiste 6-4 6-3.

Sofia Kenin, meanwhile, fell to home hope Victoria Mboko, who, at 18 years and 336 days, became the youngest Canadian woman to defeat a grand slam champion at the Canadian Open.

Data Debrief: Gauff's serve woe

Gauff has now served the outright most and second-most double faults in a single WTA-1000 match this season. She committed 17 against Collins, while earlier in the year, she made 21 against Moyuka Uchijima at the 온라인카지노 Wells Masters.

There was no such trouble for Rybakina, though, as she served up a storm against Baptiste.

She served 11 aces, and in the process matched Linda Noskova as the player with the most aces served at WTA 1000 events this season (93).
