Three workers died and three others were injured in an explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit in Naranapuram, Sivakasi district, on Monday.

The incident took place at a private facility around 3:50 PM. Police reported that the workers were engaged in making crackers when the explosion occurred, suspected to have been triggered by the friction of chemicals, reported PTI.

Three workers, including two women, died at the location. The three injured individuals were transported to the Sivakasi Government Hospital for medical treatment.

According to PTI, upon receiving information, police and personnel from the fire and rescue services department arrived at the site. They extinguished the fire and conducted rescue operations.

A case has been registered by the police, who have initiated an investigation into the cause of the blast. Preliminary reports suggest that the mishandling of chemicals or a lapse in safety protocols could be factors, though authorities await forensic findings.

Reportedly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a statement condoling the deaths. He announced a solatium of ₹4 lakh to each of the families of the deceased. Financial aid of ₹1 lakh was announced for each person seriously injured, and ₹50,000 for each individual who sustained minor injuries.

The event has renewed concerns regarding safety standards and regulatory oversight in the Sivakasi region, which is a center for firecracker manufacturing in India and has a record of industrial accidents.

This event is part of a larger trend of industrial accidents in India. A particularly fatal incident occurred on June 30, 2025, when an explosion at the Sigachi Industries pharmaceutical plant near Hyderabad resulted in the deaths of 36 workers after a reactor unit collapsed.
