Observed every year on July 11, World Population Day seeks to raise awareness about population-related challenges and their far-reaching social, economic, and environmental implications. The observance was established in 1989 by the United Nations, inspired by the milestone of ‘Five Billion Day’ on July 11, 1987, when the global population hit five billion. The proposal came from Dr. K.C. Zachariah, a senior demographer at the World Bank, recognising the urgent need to reflect on the pace and direction of population growth.
With the world population projected to surpass 8.23 billion in 2025, and reach 9.7 billion by 2050, concerns have now expanded beyond growth to include fertility decline and fears of “population collapse.” Today, World Population Day has evolved into a platform that emphasiSes not just numbers, but human rights, reproductive health, and sustainable development.
World Population Day 2025 Theme
This year’s theme, “Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world”, reflects the pivotal role of youth in shaping the global future.
UN Secretary-General's Statement
As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres asserts:
“They are not only shaping our future; they are demanding one that is just, inclusive, and sustainable. This day calls on governments, communities, and individuals to invest in youth, ensuring they have the tools, opportunities, and rights to shape their own destinies. Policies must prioritize comprehensive education, accessible healthcare, decent employment, and above all, the protection of reproductive rights.”
He further stated that beyond the population statistics, the focus must remain on people, particularly on the younger generation who lead with courage, clarity, and conscience.
“They deserve systems that recognize their voices, support their choices, and enable their full participation in society.”
He urged everyone to engage with this year’s World Population Day – be it through community events, education drives, policy advocacy, or creative submissions on issues like youth empowerment, gender equality, and reproductive justice.
