Indore has once again been declared the cleanest city in India, marking its eighth consecutive win in the government's annual Swachh Survekshan awards. The results for 2024-25 were announced on Thursday, with President Droupadi Murmu presenting the awards at a ceremony in the capital.
Indore Named Cleanest City For Eighth Consecutive Year
Surat and Navi Mumbai secure second and third positions in the annual cleanliness survey conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MHUA).
According to MHUA, in the primary category for cities with a population of over one million, Indore stood at the top, followed by Surat and Navi Mumbai. A new category "Super Swachh League Cities" was introduced this year, where Indore was again recognized for its consistent high performance.
This new league honors cities that have ranked in the top three at least once in the last three years and have maintained a position in the top 20 per cent of their respective population category in the current year.
The Swachh Survekshan, organized by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has grown significantly since its inception in 2016, when only 73 cities were assessed.
This year's survey, the ninth edition, covered over 4,500 cities, making it the world's largest urban sanitation and cleanliness survey. The assessment was based on 10 parameters with 54 indicators, focusing on the theme of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.’
Reportedly, in other categories, Noida was named the cleanest city for populations between 3 and 10 lakh.The awards ceremony was attended by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and other officials. The survey involved over 3,000 assessors and engaged with over 14 crore citizens through various platforms.
