Scottie Scheffler secured his fourth major title as he completed a procession at The Open.

Scheffler has now won three out of the four possible majors, with only the U.S. Open having so far evaded him, after an awesome performance at Royal Portrush.

Leading by four strokes after day three, the world number one marched towards glory on Sunday, carding a three-under-par 68.

That saw Scheffler finish on 17 under for the tournament, four strokes clear of Harris English, whose impressive effort of 66 sealed a 13-under finish and moved him up two places. Chris Gotterup placed third on 12 under to complete an all-American top three.

Scheffler, who won the PGA Championship earlier this year, put himself in complete control with four birdies across the front nine, despite a double bogey on the eighth, turning the back half into a serene stroll towards his maiden Open triumph.

A birdie effort on the last inched wide, but a simple tap-in completed Scheffler's round and an emphatic victory.

The American is the 31st man to win four or more major crowns, while he has become just the ninth player overall to win each of the Masters, PGA Championship and The Open.

Only three other players have achieved that feat before turning 30 – Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player.

Rory McIlroy's dazzling round on Saturday had put him in contention, and though the Northern Irishman pulled back another two shots across his final round, it was not enough to get close to Scheffler.

McIlroy birdied five holes, though two bogeys stopped him from applying further pressure to the runaway leader.

It was nevertheless a celebration for this year's Masters winner McIlroy on his homecoming, as he ended up tied for seventh alongside Xander Schauffele, last year's Open champion, who just missed a birdie putt on the last to finish on 10-under, and Robert MacIntyre.

Matt Fitzpatrick's late surge saw him finish a stroke ahead on 11 under, with Li Haotong also gaining a shot back late on to push himself into the top six. That duo finished T4, along with Wyndham Clark.

Bryson DeChambeau also enjoyed a fine fourth round, carding a seven-under 64 – the best of the day – to finish T10.

Further back, Phil Mickelson carded four under to finish on one under for the tournament, while Shane Lowry and Jordan Spieth rounded out on two under.

Lee Westwood capped off his first appearance at a major since 2022 with a two-over-par 73, but finished a stroke ahead of Lowry and Spieth overall, level with Jon Rahm.
