Zimbabwe ended Day 2 of the second Test at 51/1 in their second innings, trailing by 405 runs against a dominant South African side at the Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. South Africa declared their innings at a commanding 626/5, with Wiaan Mulder finishing unbeaten on a monumental 367 — now the highest individual score by a South African in Test cricket, surpassing Hashim Amla’s 311. Mulder’s knock also marks the highest individual score in an away Test, overtaking Hanif Mohammad’s 337 in Barbados (1958), and making him just the seventh batter to cross 350 in Test history. Along the way, Mulder also set a new record for the highest aggregate by a South African in a single Test, going past Graeme Smith’s 362 runs against England at Edgbaston in 2003. His innings left Zimbabwe helpless on a flat Bulawayo pitch, with their bowlers offering plenty of loose deliveries that Mulder capitalised on mercilessly. Chasing the massive target of 627 runs, Zimbabwe were bowled out for just 170 in their first innings and continued to struggle in the second. With nine wickets in hand and a daunting 405 runs still required, they face an uphill battle heading into Day 3.
