Bangladesh, led by Mehidy Hasan Miraz, clinched a much-needed victory in Colombo, registering their first-ever win at the R. Premadasa Stadium in their eleventh attempt. The triumph keeps the ODI series alive after Bangladesh fell short in the opening game.
Opting to bat first, Bangladesh overcame an early setback with Tanzid Hasan departing cheaply. Parvez Hossain Emon anchored the innings with a fluent 67 off 69 balls, striking six fours and three sixes. He was well-supported by Towhid Hridoy, who compiled a steady 51.
Despite reaching 204 for 5 in the 39th over, Bangladesh suffered a middle-order wobble, losing wickets in clusters. However, Tanzim Hasan Sakib’s crucial cameo of 33 off 21 balls lifted Bangladesh to 248 before they were bowled out. Asitha Fernando (4/35) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3/42) starred with the ball for Sri Lanka.
In response, Sri Lanka started aggressively, racing to 75/2 in the first 10 overs, largely thanks to Kusal Mendis’ blistering 56 off 31 balls. But Miraz’s decision to bring his spinners on in tandem turned the tide. Tanvir Islam dismissed the dangerous Mendis, and Sri Lanka’s chase began to unravel under scoreboard pressure.
Janith Liyanage tried to revive the innings with a composed 78 off 85 balls, adding 58 for the ninth wicket with Dushmantha Chameera. However, Mustafizur Rahman and Tanzim struck late blows to seal a 19-run win for Bangladesh. Tanvir finished with 3/38, playing a pivotal role in Bangladesh’s historic win.
