In Mehrana village of Haryana, an interfaith marriage involving a couple from the same village has agitated the locals, with the panchayat ordering the dissolution of the alliance on July 20.
The Athgama khap panchayat, presided over by the elders of Kheri Sanwal, Patuwas, and Mahrana villages, has also ordered the boycott of the family of the 25-year-old Muslim man from Mahrana village and prohibited the boy from staying in the village. The girl has to marry someone else who is not from any of the three villages, as per the verdict.
The Athgama Khap Panchayat is a traditional council of elders from the Athgama region of Haryana. It is known for its influence on social and community matters, functioning as self-styled courts and community guardians. Recently, it has made multiple headlines for its decisions on love marriages and social issues.
“In Mahrana village, a young man and a woman got married on July 3 in a court. The villagers made efforts, and this marriage has now been cancelled,” Dharampal, who presided over the panchayat, reported PTI. A formal nullification of the marriage through legal process is underway.
The Marriage took place on July 3 between a 25-year-old Muslim man and a 24-year-old Hindu woman from Mehrana village in Haryana’s Charkhi Dadri district. On July 20, a Khap panchayat, called by residents of Mehrana and neighbouring Kheri Sanwal and Patuwas villages, pronounced its “verdict” on the marriage, ordering it to be annulled at the earliest possible.
Chaju Ram, a cattle farmer who attended the panchayat meeting, claimed that the woman, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste, was made to convert to Islam in front of two witnesses arranged by the groom. The alleged conversion has been reversed after the village’s intervention. The woman has sworn in an affidavit that she has returned to her previous faith, said Dharampal, who presided over the panchayat. However, the police said they did not have information on any conversion being carried out, as reported by The 온라인카지노 Express.
Police are deployed in the village in light of a similar situation in the past. However, any violence in this case hasn’t taken place, but the deployment is meant to prevent any uprising, especially if the groom returns, according to the 온라인카지노 Express. While the groom has left the village, his parents have been living under police protection since July 7. The bride, who is pursuing her Master’s from a Rohtak college, is staying with her parents in the Prem Nagar area in the Charkhi Dadri District.
“The villagers have taken their decision. I cannot and do not want to say anything more now. My mental balance is not right,” said the groom’s grandfather, a retired Army man. The family of the woman did not wish to speak on the issue.
