French Open: Gauff Finds A Way To Get Past Keys In Quarter-final

Gauff is the youngest player since Serena Williams in 2002 to claim a 10th women's singles win against a former Grand Slam champion

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff is through to the semi-final of the French Open after a 6-7 6-4 6-1 victory over compatriot Madison Keys at Roland-Garros on Wednesday.

But the 21-year-old had to overcome a poor start to get the win, having trailed 4-1 in the first set and been one point away from 5-1.

After saving that point, Gauff battled back to get within a point of taking the first set but three double-faults in the tiebreaker put paid to her chances.

The second set was better, although Gauff was pegged back from 4-1 up to 4-4 by Keys. But a break and a hold later from Gauff and the match was level.

Gauff then motored through the third set, breaking in the first game, and again in the fifth to make it 4-1.

Having held to make it 5-1, Gauff then found herself with match points in hand and was eventually able to rubber-stamp the victory.

Data debrief: Scruffy Gauff get through

That match itself was a scruffy one, with a combined 101 unforced errors, 14 breaks of serve and Gauff herself registered 10 double-faults.

Gauff's first set was the first that she has dropped while at the tournament.

But she is now the youngest American in the Open Era to win 25 or more women's singles matches at Roland-Garros.

Gauff is also the youngest player since Serena Williams in 2002 to claim a 10th women's singles win against a former Grand Slam champion.
