Referee Francois Letexier blows his whistle, and we are underway at Charlotte. Will we have a high-scoring match in store for us today?
SLB 0-0 BAY (0’)
Leroy Sane, who will leave for Galatasaray at the end of this season, has started the game well as Bayern are controlling the ball in the early stages of the game. No attacking threat from either side yet.
SLB 0-0 BAY (5’)
A very good shot from Di Maria, who latched on to a poor clearance from Sane. The Argentine takes a touch and shoots from outside the box, and Neuer had to be at full stretch to touch it behind for a corner.
SLB 0-0 BAY (9’)
What a start for Benfica! 21-year-old Norwegian Andreas Schjelderup gets his first goal of the Club World Cup. Aursnes does brilliantly to cross the ball from the right side, and it evades everyone in the box but reaches the onrushing Schjelderup, who makes no mistake with his finish.
Benfica are currently top of the group!!
SLB 1-0 BAY (13’)
Sanches gets his name taken by the referee for a late challenge on Muller. Benfica are not happy, as they thought they had a strong penalty shout some moments ago which was waved away by the ref. Tempers are flaring.
SLB 1-0 BAY (20’)
Bayern Munich are pushing hard for an equaliser, with most of the threat coming from Sacha Boey down the right flank. However, Trubin is yet to see any shots on his goal.
SLB 1-0 BAY (29’)
After about three minutes of cooling break, the match continues, and Benfica get the shot off through Di Maria. The Argentine gets the ball from Schjelderup and shoots with his left foot from some distance, but hte ball is always rising and does not threaten Neuer’ goal.
SLB 1-0 BAY (39’)
Gnabry fashions a chance out of nothing. Bischof plays it to the winger, who beats Aursnes and cuts it back across into the middle of the box. Sane, who was not ready, shoots, and it goes high and over the bar.
SLB 1-0 BAY (44’)
Bruno Lage’s team are absolutely knackered as the referee blows for half-time. Muller had a decent chance two minutes into added time, but could not get a proper connection from Sane’s cross. For now, Benfica lead.
SLB 1-0 BAY (HT)
The players are out, and the second half is underway in North Carolina. Can Bayern Munich avoid their first defeat of the Club World Cup? Kane, Kimmich, and Olise are on for the German club for the second 45 minutes.
SLB 1-0 BAY (46’)
The changes are working wonders for Bayern, who have a sense of directness and urgency about them. Kimmich almost handed it on a platter for the onrushing Sane, but Trubin did well to rush out and gather the ball.
SLB 1-0 BAY (50’)
A double change from Benfica as Akturkoglu and Kokcu come on. Bayern are clearly on the ascendancy, as a double-save from Trubin has somehow kept their lead intact.
SLB 1-0 BAY (55’)
Woooah. It was a late, late flag from the linesman, as the entire Bayern team went off celebrating. Kimmich receives the ball from the right, and takes a touch before shooting towards the right corner, beating Trubin. The linesman’s flag goes up, and it’s Kane who is adjudged to be offside for obstructing the goalkeeper. Big call from the refereeing team. Meanwhile, Bayern bring on Konrad Laimer.
SLB 1-0 BAY (62’)
Laimer is played through first time by Muller, and Laimer gets a shot off from the right edge. The balls hits the far post corner and bounces back, but it would not have counted anyway as the flag goes up for offside.
SLB 1-0 BAY (67’)
It’s wave after wave of attack from Bayern, and Trubin makes a massive save to deny Pavlovic. Olise floats in a terrific cross from the right flank with his left foot. Guerrero rises to head it, but it falls to Pavlovic in the box, and he shoots, but the goalkeeper goes down quickly to keep it out.
SLB 1-0 BAY (75’)
Bayern have thrown a lot of numbers forward in the search for an equaliser, with Olise leading the charge. Somehow, and with some solid performances from Trubin, Benfica are hanging on with six minutes or so of normal time left to play.
SLB 1-0 BAY (84’)
What an exceptional save from Trubin! A sublime pass from Kane plays Sane one-on-one against the goalkeeper. The winger shoots with his left, but Trubin is quick off his line and makes himself big, getting a left hand on the ball to keep it out.
SLB 1-0 BAY (87’)
After eight minutes of added time, during which Bayern had four to five attacking chances, including a last-minute header from Kane that was called back for a foul, Benfica secured their first-ever win against the German giants.
It’s a historic result, and Benfica are officially top of Group C!
