NHRC Notices Railways And Haryana DGP Over Gangrape Case of Woman In Train Compartment

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the Railway Board and the Director General of Police (DGP) of Haryana after taking suo motu cognisance of media reports concerning the alleged gangrape of a woman inside a stationary train in Panipat, and her subsequent abandonment on railway tracks in Sonepat, where she suffered serious injuries after a train ran over her leg. 

According to an NHRC statement released on Thursday, the incident took place on June 24, with the woman later found by police on June 26 near Hindu College in Sonepat. She is currently undergoing medical treatment at a hospital. 

The NHRC said that the content of the media report, if true, raises serious concerns regarding the violation of human rights, prompting the Commission to demand a detailed response from both the Railway Board and Haryana Police within two weeks. 

The required report must include the current health status of the victim, details of the ongoing investigation, and whether any compensation or assistance has been provided to her by the authorities. 

According to a report published on July 8, the victim’s husband lodged a complaint on June 26, stating that she had been missing since June 24 following a domestic quarrel. The police, acting on the complaint, launched a search operation and discovered the woman on the railway tracks.

In her statement to the police, the woman reportedly said she had been suffering from depression following the death of her three-year-old son about a month earlier. On June 24, after an argument with her husband, she left home and was sitting alone at the Panipat railway station when a man approached her and lured her into an empty coach of a stationary train, where he allegedly raped her. 

Two other men reportedly joined him later, and all three sexually assaulted her inside the compartment. Following the assault, the perpetrators allegedly took her to Sonepat and threw her onto the railway tracks, where a train ran over her leg. 

While an investigation is ongoing, no arrests have been made so far, cofirmed NHRC.
