India-UK Sign Free Trade Agreement, Aim To Slash Tariffs, Boost Ties

India and Britain are the world’s fifth- and sixth-largest economies and this trade agreement was announced in May, more than three years after negotiations started, and stalled, under Britain’s previous Conservative government.

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and his British counterpart Jonathan Reynolds signed the Free Trade Agreement on Thursday in England in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The free trade agreement is expected to slash tariffs and boost their bilateral ties.

The FTA was signed at Chequers, the British PM’s official country residence. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and UK Chancellor Reeves were also present at the signing.
